A Closer Look at Sedation Options

Every patient is different, which is why we offer several levels of sedation designed to match your comfort and the type of procedure you’re having.

With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), you’ll feel calm and relaxed while staying fully alert, and because the effects wear off quickly, you can return to your normal routine shortly after your appointment.

For a deeper sense of ease, oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before treatment. You’ll feel drowsy, remain responsive to Dr. Gibbins or Dr. Draper, and likely remember little of the procedure afterward, though you’ll need someone to drive you home.

If your procedure is longer or more complex, IV sedation may be the best choice. This option delivers medication directly through an IV line, keeping you completely at ease while our team carefully monitors your comfort and safety. Afterward, you’ll want to rest for the remainder of the day.

We also offer specialist-administered sedation in specific situations—such as with young patients, individuals with special needs, or cases requiring advanced care. Partnering with trusted anesthesia providers ensures the highest level of safety and personalized attention.

If you’d like to learn more about which sedation choice is right for you, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gibbins or Dr. Draper. They’ll take the time to listen to your concerns, answer all your questions, and help you feel completely comfortable with your choice of sedation.

Making the Decision Together

Choosing the right sedation comes down to your comfort level, the complexity of your procedure, and your medical background. Your comfort level matters most—if you experience only mild anxiety, nitrous oxide may be all you need, while stronger fears might make oral or IV sedation a better fit. We’ll also consider your procedure, since simpler treatments often require only lighter sedation, whereas surgical procedures can benefit from deeper options.

Finally, your health history plays an important role. We’ll take time to review your medical background to ensure the choice is both safe and effective. Dr. Gibbins or Dr. Draper will guide you through each option, answer every question, and recommend the approach that feels right for you.

The Comfort Sedation Can Provide You

Sedation dentistry can make a world of difference in your experience. It helps you ease anxiety, allowing you to focus on healing instead of stress. It also enhances comfort, minimizing pain or discomfort throughout your procedure. For patients who find it difficult to sit still or who struggle with a strong gag reflex, sedation can simplify treatment and make the process smoother. Many patients even create a more positive experience overall, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
